What is Gothic Horror? Introduction

Introduction
Gothic Horror- 'The Dark Hidden Truth'

What is Gothic Horror, what we learnt in Kat's lesson...
In Kat's lesson we through what we thought of Gothic Horror, we had basic understanding and it was interesting looking into it more and linking certain settings, buildings, weathers etc. with Gothic Horror, it was slowly all making sense and I really enjoyed learning more.

This is what I recapped on and learnt... When I think of Gothic Horror I think of a creepy settings with medieval style of architecture, stain glass windows, with a dark, gloomy surrounding. The feeling of 'no escape', falling through doors, secret passages, the threat of being buried alive, no obvious exits to escape from, just that overall fear of vanishing into the sinister darkness and people not hearing you scream for help.

All Gothic Novels are set in places such as castles, churches, abbeys, monasteries, imprisonments which backs up the feeling enclosure, as these places are very secretive, secluded places. Which gives the stories a real sense of fear and wonder.

At the beginning when Gothic Novels were bought out it was seen as 'shameful' and 'Barbaric'. The first novel to be published was 'The Castle of Otranto' 1764 Horace Walpole and following 'The Monk' by Matthew Lewis, this book really shocked the nation at the time, it was full of sex, supernatural and ghastly violence which is rarely seen in literature.

You will see these settings in all gothic novels throughout the victorian era such as my chosen book The Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, where it's set mainly in Dr. Jekyll's laboratory, he hides himself in a secluded area distant from the outside world, where the city is very foggy, dark and gloomy, I gathered the sense of this darkness hothering over the city.

A Gothic monument near where I live with image & video...

I wanted to use this image because it is a place not far from me, it's an old ruin built from 1766-1775, every time I go past it freaks me out, I heard about different suicides and murders happening here, all myths but still this place makes my spine shiver. When I think gothic horror I think derelict buildings in the middle of nowhere and the racton ruins is surrounded by nothing but a few cottages and fields, it has eery, winding branches that cover it ever so slightly, making it look creepy. There has also been supernatural sightings at the ruins and paranormal activity with people seeing figures and bricks being thrown, it is very isolated and tucked away which makes it intriguing to know more yet a "Stay clear" site for many passers.

Gothic Horror, is sinister, it 'oshes' evilness throughout, with warning signs of Heaven and Hell throughout, leading back to The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, where he transforms himself from 'Good' to 'Evil' with a potion and I feel this symbolises between Heaven and Hell.

Also it shows clear sexual power of the male sex, empowering women and this is freighting, reflecting what women and others feared. Crimes were being committed in the cities and this fear was being reflected in these novels, it showed great fear and anxiety.
