This week in our hair class a third year taught us a harlequin style/ american horror story inspired look, as a lot of us are trying to gain inspiration for our character designs for our upcoming second half of our assessment. I chose American Horror story season 4 to concentrate on for my assessment and to gain more from how to create certain looks was such a help. I found this class very helpful and she was very insightful and was very knowledgeable.

We started with our katie doll, we started we changing it up a bit and created a funky looking zig zag parting, as we are so used to a straight parting it was good to do something different. Even though I found this quite tricky to master this.

After this we created two high, side ways pig tails either side of the head, making the structure smooth and tight to the head. We used hot curling tongs to curls the hair in both bunches, we then teased and back combed each curl giving the hair more volume and craziness.

Each curl we pinned into a messy bun shape with still free bits of curl falling from it giving it a mad harlequin look with loads of texture; with structure but with boldness.

I feel when carrying out this task, I could of been neater and more accurate with gripping down the curls in a better shape on the head. I learnt to curl and tease the hair correctly and struggled with the simplest part which was the zig zag parting. These are the simple things that I need to work on in the future, as they are simple, popular and effective.

Products & materials used:
  • Katie doll
  • Pin comb
  • Brush
  • grips and wide set pins
  • Afro comb to backcomb curls

This image was our inspiration, giving us a guideline and trying different techniques.

Images of my week in class, learning the design that we will be carrying out, being influenced by american horror story, carnival theme from season 4 and making it into your own interpretation.

Curls created with heated tongs

Backcombed the curls slightly giving them volume and more texture, this also makes it easier to grip the curls down to form buns either side.

I enjoyed this lesson with being more free with the design itself and doing something more modern and contemporary; however, I feel I could of improved on the parting and making it more straight with the pig tails, however I mastered the curls and the gripping to form messy buns and I loved the outcome I produced.

I was happy with the outcome of the hair design, I followed her steps during class and created something very similar, but used more backcomb in the design because I want to do something similar with my character design Claudia, as I wanted to create a real life puppet/ doll and feel this design or something similar would be perfect for it. During this week I found it exciting creating a different look which isn't period hair, to be more messy and crazy with the design.

It made me think of my character design and I wanted to create pig tails for my puppet/ doll claudia character. I looked at some further images after lesson to see what I could do.
