Evaluation

Evaluation

The project theme was Gothic horror, from our chosen Victorian Gothic horror character from a classic novel, leading onto our chosen horror TV series, with recreating characters to fit in with the show. I found this project challenging and fascinating, from classic horror makeup/hair through to more experimental special effects, I loved the variety and fun I had with this project, where there were no boundaries.

I enjoyed both parts of the unit, however I preferred the character designs for our chosen TV series, I got to push myself technically and creatively, this challenged me to think outside the box and to put my techniques learnt into action, to really show my progression. I was extremely happy with my final images and I was impressed with my progression as an artist.

I have learnt a whole new world of special effects, it was challenging yet satisfying to see something look so real with makeup. I discovered a new found love for this area of makeup, where I have the desire to develop and learn more techniques. Also my overall application makeup techniques have progressed, I create looks with more detail and precision.

My weaknesses within the unit, was planning and structuring out my ideas with a clear vision, also with continuity lighting and remembering each step I took to recreate the look. I also feel I could have more confidence and faith in my work and to make more mistakes to learn from and to overall to push myself more.

I was highly influenced by special effects and researching into classic 50's/60's glam mixed with horror, overall I can say I'm happy with my creations, but I will pick up and learn from my flaws.

Introduction to Claudia, Quintin, Mrs.Laderman & presentation

Introduction to the second part of the unit: Claudia & Quentin & Mrs. Laderman

During Kat's class we went over the characteristics of the characters:

Claudia, in her early twenties, no parental guidance, her relationship with movies had developed an unhealthy way of thinking horror movies are real life, she is either evil or misunderstood, only parental guidance or help was from her next door neighbour who is over bearing and controlling of Claudia, she believes in supernatural & has a imaginary boyfriend Quentin.

Quentin, Is Claudia's imaginary boyfriend, where he is constantly let down by Claudia, she has suspicions that he's having secret affairs, each time he changes with Claudia's mood, he could be looking very handsome based on her being in a great mood or looking rough and scraggy looking. He visits Claudia regularly as they don't live together, he is also into horror movies as Claudia is into role playing to suit her to what mood she may be in. This relationship is a constant battle, as Quentin feels disappointed and let down by Claudia but he is well and truly under the thumb.

Mrs. Laderman, is in forties, she is the only link for Claudia to the outside world, Mrs. Laderman lives next door and has a variety of mood changes, she is evil and controlling yet she comforts Claudia as a friend or even like a child.

Our challenge for this project is to choose a TV series out of the list that was given to us, I decided to choose American Horror Story Seasn 4 "The Freak Show" because I had recently come to the end of this season and I was fixated with from the era of the period it was set to the weirdness and quirkiness of the carnival freak show, so I felt I could express my ideas well.

After choosing a TV series, we went over the characters (Claudia, Quentin & Mrs. Laderman) we had to pick 2 characters and place them in our chosen TV show or replace them with a character in the show, so I decided to choose Claudia & Mrs. Laderman, I chose for Claudia to be another addition to the "Freak" family and for Mrs. Laderman to replace Elsa Mars the main ring leader of American Horror Story, as I felt their personalities in ways are similar. I was very excited to get started with creating and being as creative as we like with this. I wanted to research more into my characters and produce a great story to fit in with the show itself.

The following weeks we produced presentations to show the class with our thoughts and ideas and what we wanted to achieve.

This slide is all about my chosen TV Show, setting, period and why I chose it.

I went onto speaking about the audience demographics, 18-49 like most horror TV series, it hits a wide age group, where you have the different characters from the handsome rebel young man Jimmy who attracts younger viewers, where he gains a couple love affairs, you have the attractive young lady maggie, you have the powerful, leader who is a women Elsa Mars which is very liberating to have a woman in charge especially in that period of the 1950's/60's. You have a wide mix of things happening which makes it so watchable and interesting. The "Freaks" are strong and powerful and want to be seen as everyone else is seen, it gets them angry and crimes and mysterious things start to happen. I like how all "the freaks" stick together and are as a whole, the show is based on real life historical people who had deformities and how they were perceived as unhuman back in history. I like the empowerment of "the freaks" that stand up proud for what they are.

I needed to add more to the slide, so I am writing more here to explain what I want to achieve with my characters and overall project.

I then research into my chosen character Mrs. Laderman where I will be replacing Elsa Mars with her, she will be controlling of her freaks similar to Elsa Mars, yet more evil, charming and will always get her way. She is the ring leader and overbearing controlling of Claudia, who she saved from her house fire who lived in a derelict old building next door to the carnival and trailor of Claudia's, Mrs. Laderman took her in, reconstructed her as her face melted away, she was now a new member of the "Freak Show" the final act to perform with Mrs. Laderman, as a ventriloquist act, she reconstructed Claudia into a puppet/real life doll, perfect porcelain skin.

She is evil, controlling and has a hidden power, when she doesn't get her way, she can stare at Claudia or anyone else and make them do what she wants and to feel deep love for her. People may say she's a hidden witch, but she saved "the freaks" lives and Claudia's.

With makeup and hair design, I want to keep her glam in style with the 1950's/60's curled/ frizzed hair, prominent eye brows, large coloured makeup with glitter to reflect her carnival showbiz life, with also the classic red lip, with powdered skin and rosey pink cheeks.
Her deformity is hidden, its her power to control everyone,  but it does wear off and the side effects for Claudia causes her to go psychotic, insane by fitting and scratching off her face.

My chosen word for Mrs. Laderman is Fork, here are the notes on my slide to why I chose this word, I feel a fork is a controlling use of equipment.

This is also my first attempt of a mood board for Mrs. Laderma, which I feel needs a lot of improvement now looking back at it, I needs a clearer vision and more imagery that isn't entirely makeup and hair based. I will adapt this for my final look at the end of the project.
However, I liked the blue metallic eyes and the classic red lips which is very pin up during the 50's/60's.

Claudia, she has been rescued from a fire next door to Mrs. Laderman, it was an old rustic building, she had no parental guidance, she is very much into supernatural, I fire occurrence is unknown but I feel it was down to supernatural experiments, but the case closes as no one is aware she exists other then Mrs. Laderman, where Claudia is saved by her. She is now in complete control of Mrs. Laderman, reconstructed by her as her face melted in the fire and could not be saved.
She is now part of Mrs. Laderman's "Freak Show", the final act as a puppet/ doll, she is a porcelain freaky beauty and sits on Mrs. Ladermans lap as a ventriloquist doll/puppet, she is misunderstood and depends on Mrs. Laderman for everything. Mrs. Laderman uses "medusa" eyes to keep her in line, for claudia to dote on her and do everything she says, Claudia is mute to every day people but only speaks with Mrs. Laderman or the "supernatural", this is why she is so misunderstood.

I want the makeup to be freaky doll/puppet makeup, maybe with the use of special effects with cracking of the skin from where she is trying to escape from her china looking reconstructed mask. I want her hair either to be in pig tails or in some doll like style, I want to create her skin near enough white to fit a doll like comparison.

I am excited to experiment and research into Claudia more and progress with the character design ideas.

The chosen word I chose for Claudia is 'Stitches' to relate to her being mute because it's like she has her mouth stitched together and also where she's had string attached to her hands to keep her moving during the act with Mrs. Laderman, this causes her skin to bleed and stitches to sow up her wounds.

Mood Board for Claudia, but this will be changed as I was not happy with the imagery, it doesn't say enough.

This is the end of my presentation, I will now develop my character ideas with face charts. hair designs and more research and also I will also recreate my mood boards.

When we met Michael Key...

MICHAEL KEY...

The man who did the makeup for weird Science, the Grinch, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, Charmed etc. and he's here at our university? Gobsmacked..

The day we met the one and only legend himself Michael Key, he gave a speech about the upcoming world competition IMATS in June in London, explaining how us students can apply and how to, it sounded amazing and once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of. I feel this year I wouldn't be confident enough but i'm not saying I will practice for next year.

He was truly inspirational and it was amazing to hear him answer our questions with such enthusiasm about the industry. He also was so down to earth man who was willing to ask any questions we had and we stayed at the end to speak to him also about how tough the industry is but never giving up, do work that is volunteer, practice when you can and thrive to succeed. Overall I was honored to meet him and I also got a message back on instagram which I was so happy about, he is such an incredible, talented, successful makeup artist and what a pleasure for him to come to our university.

Us all at the talk with Michael Key

My week in Italy, Pisa-Siena-Florence to Venice

I went on a week trip around Italy where I stopped off at many places, including gothic design buildings, I gathered inspiration and from street art work around the country.
The architecture was highly detailed and gave me a inner meaning and sight of gothic horror dating back to the early and late Victorian times.
It was very interesting to see their take on this subject and I wanted to share my experience on my blog.

They are highly driven by orignality and authentic designs, the country is so beautiful in its own way and it opened my options up to what I could do with my designs.
Here are some images from my trip to Italy.

Mr. Hyde hair chart designs & final

Mr. Hyde Hair Chart Design 1.

I gathered a lot of my inspiration from late victorian hair styles and from the recreated 1921 version of Mr. Hyde, it is all show in my research. I wanted a sleeked back hair style, to recreate a greased 'monster' called 'Mr. Hyde', this is how I visioned him being like so I stuck with this idea and also it is a simple yet effective design for my continuity assessment.
Here are some designs I come up with.

High Definition & how it effects makeup/hair artists

What is High Definition?(HD)

High Definition is viewed on large tv sets, where the picture quality is significantly brighter, sharper and overall clearer, this is due to the high increased pixillation of the picture. It creates a more life like vision and you can see the differences compared to standard present tv screens. HD can provide images 5-10 times clearer/sharper and it is of the highest quality to can find.

How does it effect makeup/hair artists?

Therefore, this will effect makeup and hair artists, due to seeing the picture so clearing, that you can see down to the finest details of the pores and every single hair; therefore it is so important to test there looks behind camera before there models/ celebrities etc go on air to avoid any mistakes or overload of the foundation etc.

Because of how technology had evolved, many talented artists are still new and inexperienced with the harsh realities of HD, where any imperfection can be seen. All true detailed work can be seen on the person behind camera, from the quality of the skin through to the bone structure & features. This makes a makeup and hair artists job twice as pressurised to get the look right along with right amount of product on the skin so it looks flawless on HD tv.

Here is a clear example of a makeup error and seen on HD tv, it was all over the internet, straight after being aired, Nadine with her orange masked foundation, how would that makeup artist be feeling right now? She would be horrified and also when Nadine looks back or is told she will NOT use that makeup artist again or she will be fired, simple as that. It makes the celebrity look bad and looks like that she can't do her make-up properly and effects her reputation slightly.

With skin issues such as acne this is very clearly seen on HD, its important for them to conceal and not create the 'cake effect' which can make there skin like worse then when they started, also with using too much concealer under the eyes can create the 'racoon look' and with a thick base application of foundation & over powdered skin which makes viewers look at there shocking makeup and not watching the tv show.

This ends up back on the makeup artist reputation, artists could loose their jobs because it won't be blamed on the fact that technology has evolved, therefore it is important for makeup/hair artists to evolve with the times, test makeup looks and be vigilant with everything they create, because every detail is seen, even down to the finest of detailing, this makes their jobs twice as challenging.

A video of makeup looks that were a complete fail and seen on HD, but hopefully they just did their makeup themselves not professional makeup artists.

Early Victorian research & practical

Early Victorian Hair Designs and History
Early Victorian was from 1830-1860
  • When Queen Victoria took to the throne 1837-1901 (The longest reigning Queen in History)
In photographs you see the hairstyles in the early victorian times was well structured with a definite centre parting, neat, tight sausage like curls pinned to the head, plaited buns in a high bun on top of the head also called 'Napolo Knot'

These styles were pre-victoria on the throne, where they had a long neck with a lot of neck, shoulders and chest exposed making them look prolonged, making them look elegant.

They also wore a lot of hats and styling there hair so the style would fit/ work with the hat, making the sides of there her curled or facial hair covering the sides of their cheeks. As time went on the hair became looser with the curls, not so structured but still structure in place, bonnets ladies wore, they still had the fixed, neat centre parting in place and same style just less hard looking to the eye.

After Queen Victoria took the throne and years went by, the hair became lower, hair became flat to the head such as plaited buns tightly pinned to the sides of the head and plaits below ears, there was still a tidy look but not as precise as it was.

Men's hair-
Fluffy side burns, a lot of facial hair, it was popular back in the victorian times, but looked very tidy and I believe they used small hot tongs to curl their facial hair, making the curls very tight to their face.
The side parting of the hair was popular, sleek with great accuracy of the parting to the side, they took the time to consider the hat within their hair style so with 'hat hair' their hair would still look how they wanted it to look when taking the hat off. They tended to make their hair fluffy, bigger on top where the hat is placed and neat else where.

Both men and women looked after their hair and style during this era, this was the era where they washed, because of the industrial revolution coming in action, making hot water more accessible and common to bathe in; they were able to access more resources.

When looking through the men's styles back in the 19th century, I feel this could be carried out by men these days and looks very trendy in the modern day and found the interesting as they were wearing their hair similar to styles worn today.

I found this image of this young lady which I was drawn to with the tightness of the plaited bun on top of her head which is in a cone like shape. This is a good example of the early 1800's with the chest and neck on display. I love this photo because of its relaxed feel but still very elegant and feminine.

More examples of hair designs in the early 1800's, tight curls to the side of the head in a sausage like shape but tightly compacted and structure to the head. With the strong centre parting which was very popular throughout the 1800's.

Here is an image of a prime example of the exposure of the chest along with the details and embroidery. Her hair is tightly plaited at the sides which are flat to her head with her long neck creating elegance.

What we did and how...

This week we looked at early Victorian hairstyles, we had an image of Queen Victoria and resembled the look on each other; with the classic centre parting, plaited bun pinned tightly to the head with drapping plaits either side of the head tucked under the ears and finishing off into the bun at the back.
It was a classic hair style from the time of 1810-1830 and Royal hair style.

I enjoyed the simplicity of this hair style, how simple yet beautiful the hair style was.
First of all I made a centre parting, tied the hair in a high ponytail sleeked back tightly, looking very smooth and sleek.
I then sectioned the hair and created a line horizontally across the hair line and used the hair either side to create looping plaits and tied them.
I then created a classic plait, twisted it into a bun shape and pinned it down to the head, making to secure with hiding the grips in the bun; making it look tidy and neat looking. After this I looped each plait around each ear and pinned them into the plaited bun.
Here are images below of my hair design I carried out along with the slide of our homework to research into.

Helen recreating the look for us step by step during class with inspirational images of the Queen behind.

Here are images of my design I created on my model, sides, front and back images.

Image of the final look I created, with the sleeked back plaited bun, with the looping plaits at the sides, which resembles the Queens style very well.
